What to look for when purchasing bedding

Selecting bedding and accessories to beautifully appoint your bedroom can be somewhat overwhelming.  While it is fun to shop the stunning linens, charming décor and plush coverlets, after a bit of looking, all of the fabrics, hues and vast choices can be daunting.  How can you best select smart and stylish items for your sleep space? Consider a few simple tips.

Remember your budget. Don’t think that there’s only one price point for beautiful and comfortable bedding. Do your research.  There are a wide variety of luxe sheets, supportive mattresses, beautiful coverlets, dreamy duvets, soft pillows and other pieces available to fit any budget.  And don’t be afraid to mix and match.  You may prefer a more expensive mattress, but then may pair it with more affordable sheets to create a combination that is both beautiful to you and budget friendly.

Know what you prefer. Is a firm mattress your preferences? Do you like percale sheets that “sleep cool”? Do you like the soft weight of a duvet or the unique warmth of a coverlet?  What colors would you like to feature in the place where you drift off to dream? There are a lot of bedding options on the market today. Before you start shopping, make a list of your preferences to help you narrow down what you like, what you can compromise on, what to avoid and what you need to look for.

Consider fiber content, threat count and weave. When shopping for sheets, don’t forget to read the label. Sheets made of 100 percent cotton are an excellent choice. Premium extra-long staple cotton like Pima or Egyptian evokes a luxury feel.  Cotton is always soft and sleeps “cool”.  Blends may feel synthetic to the touch, and even though they don’t wrinkle, they tend to sleep “hotter” than other fabric choices.  And with thread count, higher isn’t always better.  300 to 500 thread count offers superior softness and strength. Lower thread counts usually mean an inferior product, while thread counts higher than 500 doesn’t necessarily ensure a more quality product, only a higher price tag. When looking at weave, percale and sateen are two popular choices. Percale feels light and crisp. Sateen is smooth and silky but may not be as cool.  Shop around and touch fabric samples to determine what you like.

Make sure it fits. With the advent of more and more advanced mattresses, there is no one standard mattress depth anymore. When mattress shopping and sheet set shopping, measure carefully and read labels and descriptions. Your new memory foam mattress may require “deep pocket” sheets instead of a “standard” size.  With a little careful research and attention to detail, you’ll be able to select sheets that are the perfect fit for your mattress.

Check the return policy. Despite careful deliberation, label-reading, measuring and color swatch referencing, errors happen.  Be sure to check the return policy on any items you purchase, from linens to mattresses.  Different companies handle exchanges and returns differently, so be sure to understand you options before you purchase any pieces.

Creating a luxury sleep space requires a little creativity, a bit of research, some careful consideration and some thoughtful shopping.  But with a little determination, you can create a lovely, luxe, well-appointed place to slumber peacefully.
